Project Area C: Hydrogel mimetics and modulators

Area C

Area C

In research area C, we will focus on the synthesis and modeling of mucus components, as well as mucus modulators. A major theme with unique expertise will be the de novo synthesis of mucins by applying new peptide/protein synthetic technologies, as well as glyco-engineering of the protein surface. These studies will be closely followed by the modeling of mucus components in order to reveal their role in the native mucus. Also new types of glyco- and peptide-hydrogels will be formed that mimic the native mucus. A central role with unique expertise will be the analysis of complex glyco-architectures in the glycocalyx and mucus. This will be enabled by new analytical and synthetic techniques. The project on redox-modulators will focus on the reversible reduction of mucus in health and disease and build a translational platform for intervention in cystic fibrosis and other muco-obstructive lung diseases where effective mucolytic compounds are a high unmet need.
